I. Overview of Panda’s Urban Rail Transport Industry
The Engineering Technology Research Center of Nanjing Urban Rail Transport AFC System at Panda Group boasts an elite team of innovative, enterprising and outstanding technical personnel. In recent years, it has completed many national programs, and major provincial and municipal development projects, and won the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Jiangsu province in 2006. It has registered several patents and copyrighted software.

Based on a foreign advanced “Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System”, Panda Information Industry Group has developed TVM (Ticket Vending Machine), SEMI-TVM, GATE (Automatic Ticket Checking Machine), PVU (Portable Verifying Unit), automatic recharging machines, readers and relevant control software systems as well as other dedicated support equipment. Due to its independently developed “AFC Clearing Center (ACC) system”, it has R&D and manufacture capabilities from modules to equipment and from software to systems. Therefore, it becomes one of the few companies fully involved with the entire chain of automatic fare collection for urban rail in China. In addition to installations in Nanjing, Beijing and other cities, its products are extensively exported. The company is one of main suppliers of AFC/ACC systems and dedicated supporting equipment for Chinese cities, and will serve as the production center of AFC and supporting equipment for its cooperative partner—the French company Thales. At present, Panda is capable of producing 4,000 GATEs and 1,000 TVMs per year. In April 2003, the group undertook the construction of Automated Fare Collection (AFC) System Project of Nanjing Metro Line 1 jointly with Thales, one of the world’s top 500 companies. With over three years of operation, the Nanjing Metro Line 1 is appraised by MTR Corporation as the most advanced and stable AFC in China.

II. Products:
 ACC System of Nanjing Metro
Nanjing Panda Information Industry Group successfully won the bid for the AFC Clearing Center (ACC) for Nanjing Metro in March 2003.
The goal of the AFC Clearing Center (ACC) system software is:
 • enabling a separate ACC to allocate earnings among different lines,
 • allocate earnings between Metro and City Smart Card Clearing Center for clearing and reconciliation by means of separate security and key systems,
 • operate uniform rules and rates of clearing,
 • integrate the management of AFCs of the various lines,
 • monitoring the status of lines, stations and equipment.
The AFC Clearing Center (ACC) system software is capable of supporting multi-line access of Metro. By use of the special ticket, the passenger may get on the train at any line, and switch lines. The travel cost is then debited to the card.

 AFC System for Nanjing Metro Line 2
Nanjing Metro Line 2 is a key east-west line connecting the downtown area and the sub-center in the west of the city. Running from Wangjiacun Station in Hexi New Town in the west to Maqun Station at the foot of the Zijin Mountain in the east, the line has a total length of 25km with 19 stations. On the strength of its successful experience in the excellent AFC project of Nanjing Metro Line 1, Nanjing Panda won the bid for the AFC System for Nanjing Metro Line 2 in 2007.

The AFC System Project of Nanjing Metro Line 2 manages tickets, money, passenger flow, and information by adopting the advanced five-layer structure of “ACC－LC－SC－SLE－ticket card”, thereby ensuring a reliable and safe system. Line 2 uses the non-contact IC ticket AFC system. After its completion, the system will meet the networked operation requirement, and implement the smart card system for urban transport and the single-ticket system for rail transport. The AFC system of Line 2 includes LC, SC, repair site, testing and training subsystem, TVM, SEMI-TVM, GATE, PVU (Portable Verifying Unit), tickets, network equipment, power facilities.

• Ticket Vending Machine
The Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) is part of the AFC system. The machine provides passenger self-purchase of one-way tickets. It accepts coins, paper currency, various stored-value cards and other payment methods, and gives coin change. It is composed of main control unit, passenger display, operating status display, ticket reader, antenna, currency processing system, ticket processing system, power supply module and casing.

The passenger may buy the ticket with coins or paper currency
The equipment identifies whether the coins or paper currency is genuine, calculates the cost of the ticket, supplies the ticket and gives change;
The passenger display and operating status display gives necessary instructions to the passenger.

For routine management and maintenance, the operator needs a password;
There is an easy-to-use operating maintenance instruction interface, transaction and maintenance log, as well as historical data;
The modules’ software may be upgraded with strict key management;
Each module is easy to disassemble and assemble, and convenient to maintain.

• Gate （Automatic Ticket Checking Machine ）
The Automatic Ticket Checking Machine (GATE) is a stainless steel cased unit used for controlling a barrier device. After validating the ticket, the barrier opens to let the passenger pass. The GATEs are connected to the station computer and are arranged to form an array (two GATEs form an aisle). The GATEs form different types of aisles (direction: entrance, exit or bidirectional; aisle width: standard or wide aisle).

The design of GATE meets passenger requirements for rapid passing by holding tickets with the right hand. It can accept smart cards or various tickets issued by the metro operator. All tickets are processed in the following way: ticket detection, checking its validity as per the fare, debit the fare, aisle release permission or rejection. Completed tickets are recycled to collection boxes.
